Documents for international couples marrying in Mendoza
Two possible paths, very different requirements. Choosing the wrong one late is the most expensive mistake in the planning — that is why we tackle this point in the first conversation.
Path A — civil marriage at home, symbolic ceremony in Mendoza
The path most international couples we host actually take, and not by accident:
- No Argentine documentation requirements.
- Full freedom of setting: the vineyard at sunset, the terrace, the winery.
- Full freedom of timing and ceremony format.
- No risk that a registry deadline compromises the date.
- Officiant of the couple's choice — including a friend or family member.
The couple marries civilly at home weeks or months earlier, usually in a private ceremony, and the celebration in Mendoza is the one family and friends live.
Path B — civil marriage in Argentina
Possible, but treat it as a parallel project inside the wedding. What is typically required of non-resident foreigners:
- Birth certificate with Hague Convention Apostille, issued in your country of origin.
- Sworn translation by a public translator registered in Argentina.
- Valid ID and proof of civil status (apostilled certificates where applicable).
- Prior appointment at the Registro Civil, with timelines that do not follow an event calendar.
- Witnesses as locally required; in some cases, additional administrative requirements.
Important: the Argentine civil ceremony takes place at the Registro Civil office or at a venue authorised by it, with date and time set by the authority — rarely compatible with a vineyard ceremony at sunset. In practice, even couples who go for the Argentine civil marriage still hold the symbolic celebration at the venue afterwards.
Validity at home of a marriage celebrated in Argentina
- Obtain the Argentine marriage certificate.
- Have it apostilled under The Hague Convention, in Argentina.
- Arrange sworn translation at home if required.
- Register the certificate at the competent civil registry in your country.
Situations with particulars — prior divorces, different nationalities, property regime — may follow their own procedure. Consult your local registry before deciding the ceremony format.
Travel documents — couple and guests
- Valid passport. For most international arrivals, at least six months of validity from the entry date.
- Return or onward ticket may be requested at entry.
- Minors traveling without both parents require specific authorisation — confirm with your consulate.
In what order to resolve it
The choice between Path A and Path B needs to be made in the first 60 days, because it determines the date, the setting and the script of the ceremony. After that, the documentation itself is fast — what is not fast is discovering in month nine that the ceremony you want is not compatible with the legal format you chose. It is possible, but treat it as a parallel project inside the wedding: Hague Apostille of your documents, sworn translation by an Argentine sworn translator, an in-person appointment at the Registro Civil, and the local schedule for foreign residents.
